Funk
jazz blues ….lines are blurred……steeped in
tradition … acknowledging that musical development of
blues music defies modern day descriptions as retro or
backroom. With no pre ’64 reference point, Teague and
the Turnpike have spun a timeline helix with a core of
blues tightly wound by jazz, funk and rock. Teague and company
deftly move from rhythm and blues to jazz-rock to funk
without missing a beat. When asked by patrons for a
description of Hartford Turnpike's basic style, an
appropriate response would be: "Describe the crowd."
The band is
not parroting classic records,
but rather acknowledging them as a springboard and
guideline to open
expression . For
example,
Wes
Montgomery is
seen
as a favorite "blues guitarist"
and
Louis Armstrong a great "blues singer" ……. And soul
music however "pop" .....The HONEST and logical extension
of blues.
Robert and the Turnpike are
free to amuse their subjects without being restricted by
the boundaries of sophomoric convention.
The blues
.... like the orally passed sagas of
yore ... is well caught and played by the Turnpike.
They do have game for today.
